When you have been online a while you can’t but help want to learn more of  how to expand your online reach…in other words, how to make more money.

From my beginnings as an offline MLMer to now more of an online MLMer, I could not help but be curious about how to make money through Affiliate Marketing.

Reading and learning more about affiliate marketing only led me to one direction…a direction that I slowly introduced into my online MLM world. Not only was I using the Internet to prospect, I was now using the Internet to sell products and supplement my online income.

In simple terms, to be an affiliate marketer in an affiliate program, allows you to refer a customer to a merchant’s website while earning a set percentage of commission on every sale of the product the customer buys.

In the not so simple terms, is the underbelly of affiliate marketing that requires a certain skill set and constant perseverance in order to be successful at getting a customer to buy a product from a merchant’s website.

Before I tell you an easier way to get started with affiliated marketing, I want to share with you some of the bare minimum requirements that I feel will help you become a money generating affiliate.

Affiliate marketing starter kit.

1) A website.

This is not mandatory…but having a website that you can use to promote products is a huge asset. Though this will require some work, carefully choose the topic or niche of your website that will help you make money.

With a well thought out website, targeted traffic or visitors are more likely to visit…and you know what that means.

However, you can also become an affiliate if you don’t even have a website. If you have lots of friends online or offline, you can still become a good affiliate by referring them the products of the merchant through email.

2) Find the right affiliate program.

Mostly every product that is sold on the internet will have an affiliate program attached to it. Merchants have taken advantage of this opportunity and so have many affiliate marketers.

If the merchant has a product that you feel is a sure fit to your website topic or niche, just go to the merchant’s website and register as an affiliate. If the site does not have a place for you to register, contact the merchant via phone or email. Most times if the merchant likes what you got they will be glad to have you sell their stuff.

3) Choose products to sell wisely.

Not all products sell. Make sure that the product you decide to promote is relevant and in demand along with having a good sales commission.

Retail outlets like Clickbank is one place for all affiliate marketers to go to for all online products. There you will get an idea of how well the product is performing and if it is worth your while promoting it.

If you really want to learn how to be an affiliate and make money through affiliate marketing, you have to understand that it takes time for affiliate programs to generate good money for you.

I am going to assume that you are here because the title of my post caught your attention. Meaning…you have a website of your own and would like to know if you are guilty of any of the 7 reasons why your website is not being seen.

Right?

First off, I would like to congratulate you on having your own website and secondly I would like to congratulate you on having a website that is done correctly and generating tons of traffic for you.

Now you may be asking yourself…how can he possibly know whether or not my website is generating any traffic?

I’ll give you 7 reasons how I know. You see…there is no possible way that you would have allowed these 7 website faux pas to occur.

7 surefire ways of NOT getting

your website seen.

1) Your website domain name is WHAT??

An obvious place to start off with is the domain name of your website. A lousy or a non-relevant domain name that has absolutely nothing to do with your website content or your business along with the absent of any keywords is a SUPER SUREFIRE way of not getting your website seen.

2) Oh, by the way…

If you are any one of those bone head business owners that fail to include a business website address on a business website or an out going email than I do not have any pity on you. Obviously, it was never brought to your attention that having a website also requires a little promotion on your part.

With over 6 billion websites and counting, your business website is just a grain of sand on the Internet beach.

3) You haven’t updated your website in how long?

Old and outdated information is a red flag for all websites. Search engines along with your audience will never have any reason to visit nor come back to your website. Why don’t you get reacquainted with your website and see what happens.

4) Your website is FUGLY!!

If you do not know what this means than I suggest you consider another way of advertising your business. A website, in my opinion, should be visually appealing. Stimulating a persons visual cortex can add to some website allure.

If your content sucks or is boring, you may get away with it…”A picture is worth a 1000 words”

5) Tanx four visiting my sight!

Understandably, we are not all experts in the English language. But, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone else check out your website first before you present it to the online world. Preferably someone who does have a knack for spelling, grammar etc.

6) Tick…Tock…Tick…Tock

Download already!! I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time for a website page to download when it damn well pleases. I’m out of there!

If your website does not download quickly, then it is “adios” to all of your visitors. Make sure you find a good web host.

7) Cheap bastard!

Let the professionals do the work for you. Not hiring a reputable website builder will only result in one thing… FAILURE! A professionally done website that is SEO’d correctly will get you the traffic that you need.

The average cost for a decent website is between $300-$500. Having a website that compliments your business is what to be expected. Settling for less will not do.

Thinking about these 10 rules that the new Internet marketer needs to know came pretty easy to me.

How?

By having first hand experience…that’s how.

Let me be frank. There is a huge learning curve in the Internet marketing game and if you are willing to learn it, you too will experience the highs and mostly lows of this challenging industry.

So to get this started, here is my…

Internet Marketer needs to know.

1) The positive news first.

I want to first congratulate you on your decision in becoming an Internet Marketing entrepreneur. Obviously, it became clear to you that having an online business of your own will allow you to work from home, spend more time with your family and loved ones, freeing your time to socialize while enjoying your leisure activities.

2) The not so positive news.

The Internet will blast you with every ‘Get Rich Scheme‘ imaginable and this, my friend, will be hurdle number one. Whatever your online business of choice is, you must stick with the plan and follow through.

Success comes with dedication, commitment and a daily positive attitude. Remember, money made in the beginning will be scant, so patience will definitely be a virtue.

3) Do not quit your day job.

If you are currently working and generating an income, be grateful. Your pay will be drastically cut if you go full time online.

Keep the online business focus and understand that there will be a learning curve of information that has to be learned. Network with other Internet marketers while learning some online tricks of the trade.

Like…generating leads, blogging, attraction marketing, building your first website, chatting on Internet forums, social networking, learning HTML,learning PPC.

All this can be achieved as a spare time activity.

4) Don’t believe the hype.

If you come across a site making the claim that they can make you money, I suggest you delete it and pay it no mind. Think of it this way…if it sounds too good to be true than odds are it is.

‘Make money sites‘ are everywhere and it would behoove you to research before considering spending a dollar on any of them. There is no ’secret formula’ nor is there a way to make $10,000 in 30 days.

Ask yourself…if you were earning a million dollars a year, would you bother to write an ebook and market how you did it?

So what do you do? I’ll let you figure that out yourself.

5) Check the checks and the testimonials.

Images of checks and bank statements are a pretty common sight on some websites. Refer to rule #4 and do not believe all that you see. Yes, there are some people who are legit, but I would bet the farm that there are more con artists than you can count.

The same holds true for testimonials. It is very easy to get someone, especially another internet marketer, to say some nice words about a product or system. In exchange for a testimonial the internet marketer receives massive exposure and at times the product or system for free.

6) Stay tough!

Earlier, I mentioned that there was no secret formula. Well, this is not totally true. Competition is fierce online and a thick skin is required.

So what is the secret formula?

YOU! All you do and don’t do online and offline will determine your success. Think positive and keep the course always. Successful Internet Marketers have one thing in common. DEDICATION!!

7) Straighten up your act.

This is not a game. This is not a hobby. This is a BUSINESS.

Every  business requires a sense of order. Have a business plan and stick to it. Changing or updating as needed. Business activities and documents should be loggged properly and placed in the correct folders for easy retrieval.

Do not get swamped with checking all of your emails. Set time limits for tasks and do not be afraid to walk away from your computer. I say this, so as to keep your sanity.

Play by the Internet marketing rules.

There is a saying that goes like this. “There is a right way of doing things and there is a wrong way of doing things and then there is a { YOUR NAME HERE} way of doing things”.

What you do online will stay online forever. If you are found to be a cheat, a spammer or a scammer, people will find out and write some nasty things about you. It is not worth getting yourself into this position.

Stick to the etiquette of Internet Marketing (a possible oxymoron). Be ethical and make the right choices.

9) Never stop learning.

You are a newbie. The Internet can swallow you whole if you allow it. Make sure that if mistakes are made, and yes there will be plenty of them, they are made without you losing your house, your car or the very food on the table.

The Internet is constantly evolving and what may have worked a year ago may not work today. Utilize resources like expert blogs, forums and online books. I go to WebmasterWorld to learn the latest updates from Google on how to monetize my website.

10) Plan for a long stay.

Get it in your head…instant riches overnight do not exist. Pick a business and work on it. Yes, I said work…that dirty four letter word so many people hate. Things might no go right when you first start. But this doesn’t mean that you are failing.

To be successful in any business requires you to have a backbone. Stick to it even when things don’t go your way!

Develop at least a one year plan with daily actions to push you to success. You’ll make modifications along the way, but at least you have a basic road map of where you’re going.

So this is it. My 10 unwritten rules that every new Internet marketer should know. Like it or hate it, these rules will serve you better if applied.

A business blog allows a business owner to share their products or services along with the ability to connect with potential customers.

This alone makes a business blog a powerful online platform.

Now, I must say that there is a flip side to what has been said so far. A well conceived and executed blog can do great things for your business, provided a genuine resource and time commitment is brought to the process.

Blogging is slow and, at times, time consuming. But just writing a post once or twice a week and sharing it online to others on a social media site like LinkedIn, Facebook, can give your company tremendous exposure.

But also consider this.

When you use a blog as the platform of choice for your newsletters, posts or promotions, your subscribers to your blog gets the opportunity to see and respond to your current or older offers.

I make it a habit to send my latest blog post to my list. Quite often, I end up making an occasional sale on a promotion that I did some time ago. Having my blog linked to my other websites, I in return generate traffic to products or services that I offer on those sites.

Get the picture?

So my message to you, is that blogging requires no special technical knowledge. Sure, there are more advanced sides to this type of marketing strategy, but any business owner can easily set up a domain name and start posting on a regular basis.

I assure you, that over time, posting on a regular basis will generate the traffic and customer flow that every business needs.

A free webpage tool for you!

One thing you will need when making simple web pages of your own, also known as “mini-sites”, and for other very simple tasks, is a web page editor.

While you can do it in Microsoft Word, Wordpad and other text editors,  many folks choose to start out by download the free program called Kompozer, formerly known as NVU.

The Graphical User Interface makes it very easy to use, but it is a powerful program. There are tutorials on how to use it online as well.

- A place where people can talk about a variety of subjects, share information, express their personal opinions or seek opinions of others and socialize with other like minded people.

Internet Forums are basically message boards or bulletin boards. There are two types:

1) Specialty forums:

Specialty forums are subject specific forums related to particular area.

2) General forums:

General forums general in nature where people can talk about everything.

If  you are an online marketer you will most likely be using a specialty forum. There are many to choose from and they all follow more or less the same rules.

Follow these forum house rules

for effective forum usage.

1) Find your niche forum.

The obvious here is for you to find the forum that best relates to your website, product or service. Having the right targeted people seeing your product or service can bring in streams of customers.

Finding a good forum may take some research. Good forums generally share these characteristics. A strong number of active members,  forum traffic,  a positive forum community.

2) Not all forums are made equal.

To effectively have a forum work for you, make sure that the forum you choose allows you to have a signature line. Check other people’s posts or threads to see for sure.

3) Play by the forum rules.

Do not post any thread before reading guidelines and sticky threads. This will eliminate any possibility of stepping on forum toes, sort of speak.

Every forum has its own culture and what I call a welcoming committee. Acceptance by other forum  members is important for survivability. So tread lightly in the beginning and most of all do not participate in negative or politically driven threads.

4)  Do not promote your website directly.

Most forums strictly prohibit blatant promotion of a Web site, a product, or a service. Forums usually make this clear in their rules and regulations and generally have moderators to enforce them.

Forums is mostly about relationships. You’ll find that  successful people in online marketing can be attributed to the relationships they’ve built over the years on forums.

5) Provide value and stay professional.

In order for a forum to work, you must be an active member. Post and be part of the forum conversation, but do so with the intent of providing added value. Be true and believable…most of all be professional.

Do not spam or write about inconsequential topics. Posting single-word or single-line responses which don’t contribute to the conversation in any way is a sure fire way of getting banned from the forum.

Take your time and build a reputation of someone who has the answers and solutions to people’s problems.

No doubt that forums are a useful way to promote you and your business. Obey all forum house rules and watch your business grow.

result in big dividends for the

online marketer.

Online marketers are embracing social media and networking more these days than ever. Where else can a person connect with other like minded people and share not only about themselves, but share their online business opportunity.

This is why social networking is a great way to build not only relationships, but potential downlines.

Making this all work would require you to first join a social marketing site like Facebook, Bebo, Myspace and Twitter. Your goal is to add like minded friends and build relationships while advertising your site through your signature line, profile or other indirect ways. This will further your chances of online success.

The main objective of a marketer using a social networking  site is to self promote and provide value that facilitates on the back end the potential of someone joining your business or purchasing your product.

If you are considering networking on these sites for your business, be aware that there are unwritten rules that should be followed. Networking the right way and slowly introducing your offer should be the course of action. Selling before establishing a relationship could easily ostracize you and cause a negative effect on your image.

Don’t let this happen to you.

Friends that you acquired used just for advertising purposes will spread the news about you and a sharp decline of responsiveness to all your messages will be evident. You may even be blocked or unfollowed. So as to assure this does not happen to you…

1) Build Relationships

#1 on the list for the very reason that social networking sites are exactly what they imply. People come first. If you intend to use a site for prospecting purposes, it is important that you do not let the other person know. Fly under the radar.

Spend time talking more about them than talking about yourself. Constantly provide value in your messages, emails, bulletins. This will score big with your followers. As with any relationship, strong bonds are built over time.

2) Be Patient

I for one am not impressed with someone who has thousands of followers or friends. Especially if they do not show me a reason why that have so many. Reality dictates that is impossible to connect with so many people individually, let alone make a person on your list respond to what you have to say of offer.

Be patient with who you accept as a friend and do not  accept  friend’s blindly. This will benefit you more in the long run.

3) Pay attention to your followers

Responding to what others are saying means that you are involved. That you care. Offering up more information and value than sales pitches will open up avenues of communication between you and your followers.

Know the difference between discussion and attacking. If you have a different view than someone else it is ok to voice your opinion, but make sure to use facts and keep a constructive atmosphere.

4) Be human, Be genuine, be real

Keeping it real, so to speak, helps develop a trusting relationship with your followers. People buy from people they like and trust. This is why you built a list of friends in the first place. To network with people who you think would be a good candidate for your business.

Social networks offer way more than exposure for you and your business. Sharing and learning from others who are like minded can help build your business exponentially. Joint ventures and common ground with other entrepreneurs help reinforce your belief that money can and will be made on the internet.
