Search Engine Optimization

Lesson # 1.

Terms and definitions.

Not only am I writing about Search Engine OptimizationSEO for the sake of my reader, I am writing about SEO for the purpose of the writer as well.

My mentor advised me to write about things that I know the least about. She encouraged me to write about a topic that will requires some research and that will provide some value to my reader.

Well, the decision has been made. I am now at the point where I must dive into the subject of  Search Engine Optimization.

Why?

Because I  have no choice in the matter. Sure, I can outsource all of this stuff, but I trust and believe that learning the basics of  SEO will only further my knowledge base and help me become more valuable to the market place.

So to get this boat sailing, I am going to start off with some simple definitions and teach you, the online newbie,  some of simple  SEO terms and definitions.

If you never been on a boat, I guarantee you that this will be smoothest ride you ever been on. For I will try to simplify all SEO terminology to its easy to remember form.

Disclaimer: I am no SEO expert and I am fully aware that there are many SEO terms that are will not be mentioned here.

I will only mention the ones that I feel are important for the newbie to know.

SEO Terminology.

1) Search Engine Optimization

- a  highly specialized process of building a successful website.

- my definition – you now have a website. You more than likely want people in your niche to come check out your website.

So to do this, you optimize your page or website with as much relevant information pertaining to what your reader is looking for or in need of.

The pages you write should provide as much valuable content with specific terms and concepts that sets you apart from other websites that are competing against you.

2) Indexing

-  is a system used to make finding information easier. Search engine indexing collects, parses, and stores data for fast and accurate information retrieval.

- my definition – a process where a server crawls through your website, fetches every page that it can find and stores a list of keywords that are found on your site. These keywords are then used to find pages on your site when a user is performing a search.

3) Anchor Texts

- is the visible text in a hyperlink. They are the words you click on when you click a link.

- my definition – anchor texts  tells search engines what the page is about. Used wisely, it boosts your rankings in search engines, especially in Google.

4) Keywords

- generally refers to any word or phrase the user might search for in order to find a Web site or a page.

- my definition – keyword(s) are words that are most predominate in your blog, article or title of your subject page. It gives the search engines the information it needs to decide how relevant your Web site is to the user.

5) Keyword Density

- how often a keyword or keyword phrase is used on a given web page.

- my definition – same as above. With a little tip added. Do not bombard your page with too many keywords. Search engines do not like this. Google will penalize you if your keyword density is over 3%.

6) Black Hat SEO

- the use or unaccepted SEO practices in order to get higher rankings and more traffic.

- my definition – too sophisticated for the SEO newbie. But the obvious and the only one you should worry about is the practice of over stuffing your site with too many keywords.

7) Dynamic Website

- a Web site that is not fixed or static.

- my definition – a blog is a classical example of a dynamic Web site. Content of value being added to your page often will increase your page ranking.

There are many sites to reference from on the subject of SEO. Here are some that I feel will get you started on the right path .

I will be continuing to write more about SEO as time goes by. Look forward to having you as my reader.

Hmmm, I see someone has been taking notes. Very most excellent.

And I applaud the specific direction you went with this. Not as an expert, but as a man on a journey. Again… excellent choice.

I look forward to watching this journey unfold.

Great content to get the uninitiated started with a decent base of understanding. Speaking SEO can be like speaking a different language.

Thank you for dropping by.

SEO puts fear to those who are unwilling to embrace it.

You don’t have to be an expert, but it doesn’t hurt to learn and know the basics.

All the best to you!
