website with a proper URL.

As a newbie in online marketing, you are thrown into a lions den of information that overwhelms the senses and creates every error imaginable.

Whether you are computer savvy or not, certain online fundamentals need to be explored and understood so your hard work will not be in haste.

For this post, I would like to talk about one such over site that many online newbies do.

Failing to recognize the importance of a proper  URL or website address.

To get you started with some URL basics, lets find out more about what URL’s are  and how a good  domain name can bring customers to your business website.

Universal Resource Locator

(URL).

A URL has two parts. The first part or “crucial part” is the “Domain Name”. Consider this your store front name. Its imperative that this part is well thought out and memorable.

Example;

www.MyStore.com

The second part is the “Path Specifier” or sub folder of your domain name. Consider this the contents you have in your store. This will follow after the .com part of the URL.

Example;

www.MyStore.com/ecommerce

The URL, like a store front address, helps people locate your business website. However,unlike a store front address, you have the opportunity to provide a URL that best fits your business along with providing a easy way for a customer to find it.

So keep these four things in mind when you decide on your website address.

Your website URL should be;

1) Easy to dictate

Avoid words that are spelled differently but sound the same. For example; “2″ or “to” .

2) Easy to spell

Big one here…avoid “ie” and “ei” confusion

3)Easy to say

Use short simple words that your prospect will understand.

4) Easy to recognize

Give what your target prospect wants. Make your URL specific so as to not confuse prospects of what you have to offer.

Finding the perfect URL.

To help you in your quest for the perfect URL, I suggest you brainstorm up to 20 domain names that you feel wil be suitable to the particular prospect you are looking for.

Remember, you want your URL to be targeted and specific with the intention of solving or resolving the problem that you  particular prospect may have.

After you have narrowed down the  number of names, check whether the domain name is available or not.  Go Daddy is a popular central domain name registry site.

Choose the .com domain if available. Dot Com is the standard and most memorable than others that are out there.

Purchase the other domains like .org,.biz,.net if you don’t want the possibility of anybody else having the same domain as yours.

Marketing an online business is all about trial and error and testing of new ideas.

However, there are some constants that are unlikely to change for a long while.
